The Victory Column stands in the middle of the Tiergarten and commemorates the Prussian victories over Denmark, Austria and France in the 19th century. The view from the top, about 231 steps or a lift to 85 metres, is the reason to climb, and it gives the widest view in central Berlin, from the Victory Column to the Fernsehturm and out toward the Spree. The base is also where the Berlin Victory Day celebrations take place. The Großer Stern roundabout beneath the column is a chaotic five-way junction and genuinely difficult to navigate by car, so a private driver who knows the area is more useful here than a GPS.
